Kambisa!OnLine 2010/2011 - Exchange for kids
In September Kambisa! will start a new project: Kambisa!Online 2010, a programme that lets Zambian and Dutch schoolkids exchange ideas over the internet.
Look at the drawings of Parins Primary School , Bwafwano school and De Carrousel Zevenaar
Children in both countries will be making artworks around a chosen theme, in this case their dream house. The kids can draw, paint, or build a miniature of their house from any material they like. Then pictures of the dream houses will be exchanged online and they can discuss them, learning about each other’s life.
The project in Zambia will be run by a Dutch Kambisa! intern in Livingstone, Mongu, Lusaka, Chipata and Ndola. He will be visiting community schools, giving the children basic computer lessons, and demonstrating how they can use a computer to share ideas with kids from another part of the world.
Community schools in Zambia are community based learning institutions that meet the educational needs of vulnerable children, especially orphans. These schools are usually free of charge, under- staffed and under equipped.
Kambisa! decided to work with children in these schools because they are the ones who would otherwise have very slim chances of ever coming across a computer.
Most of the Dutch kids who will be taking part will al- ready be accustomed to using computers and internet, so for them the main interest of the Kambisa!OnLine workshops is getting the chance to exchange ideas with kids from a far away country, getting to communicate with them and learning about their way of life.
The discussion and exchange between the kids will be done on a special section of the Kambisa! website, designed specifically for this project, so kids will have a safe online environment to communicate with each other.
With this project we want to:
- create interaction between children in Zambia and the Netherlands and expose them to each other’s creativity
- get children to think about the life of their counterparts abroad and enable them to reflect on their own positions, possibilities and ambitions
- give kids from Zambian community schools an opportunity to acquire basic computer skills; and show them how to communicate online
